"The most precious resource the U.S. healthcare system has in the struggle against COVID-19 isn't some miracle drug. It's the expertise of its healthcare workers--and they are exhausted." -Ed Yong, The Atlantic
I'm a virtual nurse provider working safely at home, but I used to work in the Emergency Department at John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek. Every day, I think about my battle-weary former colleagues who are still fighting COVID-19 head-on, and have been for nearly a year. They're at risk, in harm's way, overworked, burnt out, and feeling forgotten.
At the beginning of the pandemic, people came out every night for healthcare workers. We honked horns, cheered, and applauded their heroism. We expressed thanks. We donated.
But now they are not the heroes anymore. They no longer receive meals, donations, or thanks. If you can support them in any way, it would be the most kind gesture. Our nurses are so tired and run down and small acts of kindness help them feel appreciated.
With your support, my goal is to resuscitate the generosity, recognition, and love that we once showered upon our frontline healthcare workers. It's been a long year and it is going to be a long winter with COVID-19 and Influenza combined. The nurses need a big show of support now more than ever. If you're wondering how we do this, it's actually simple with people who work in a hospital. You feed them.
2020 has likely been a difficult year for you too, but if you donate to this fundraiser, The Original Hickry Pit , an independent Walnut Creek restaurant, will use the money to prepare and deliver healthy meals to the Emergency Department staff at John Muir Medical Center. Any amount is welcome and appreciated and it all goes to the restaurant to fuel this effort. The more we raise, the more meals provided and the more we also support our hard-hit local restaurant workers. This is a doubly wonderful donation you'll be making.
This fundraiser is one of many that telehealth nurses all over the country are coordinating in their hometowns. United by our desire to support hospital nurses, we're mobilizing this feeling into real action that will give a much-needed lift to hospital staff and restaurants everywhere.
Funds will be collected through February 28th for meal deliveries in January, February and March. So please, SAVE RESTAURANTS, FEED NURSES. Let's take care of them, so they can continue taking care of us.
