We were recently surprised to find out our 10-month-old kittens (littermates), Saber (tabby) and Raya (calico), both had advanced forms of periodontal disease. Seven months ago, we adopted Raya and Saber from the Walden Humane Society, who gave them a “clear bill of health.” Saber’s symptoms are much further along than Raya's and require immediate surgery, x-rays, and other diagnostic tests to fully understand the extent of his prognosis.

The initial vet bill was over $400, which included a full blood panel, medical examination, and a round of oral steroids.

We have exhausted any and all opportunities to make the money for the upcoming surgery. The exact cost is unknown at this time, but it will likely require multiple extractions and imaging tests. As you probably know, anesthesia and dental work is very expensive, and this particular procedure is estimated to be around $2,000. There is no understanding of how long his recovery will be or what else will be required in terms of his adjusted lifestyle at this time.

Because Raya and Saber are both from the same litter, Raya shares the same fate. Raya’s symptoms are less severe but are estimated to require a similar procedure in the coming months that will also cost around $2,000.

Rescuing Raya and Saber was the best decision we have ever made, and every day we are reminded of that by their loving and playful nature. Saber is a wild child who possesses the power to open every door in the apartment and is constantly making us laugh. Raya is the sweetest girl and loves to snuggle and steal her brother’s toys any chance she gets.
