Last summer, Stanford Athletics announced that Stanford Varsity fencing and 9 other teams will be cut. For many of us, the varsity fencing team is truly our home, where we have found friends we’ll keep in touch with the rest of our lives. For many of us, the varsity fencing team is our last chance to compete in a sport we love for a school we love. We are immensely grateful for the support Stanford has given us over the years, and we are determined to find a way to continue this team, this experience, for future generations of fencers. If you can spare sympathy and attention, the Stanford Fencing team needs your help.
Stanford’s reasoning for eliminating the fencing team is not convincing. Eliminating the varsity program, which has existed since the school’s inception, will make no significant difference in the athletic budget deficit, reduce the representation of Asian American student-athletes and female athletic faculty, diminish Stanford’s number of Olympians and All-Americans, and remove an institution that attracted many vibrant members to the Stanford community in the first place.
There are currently two avenues being explored to reinstate the fencing team, along with the other 9 cut varsity sports.
First, 36 Sports Strong is a group of alumni representing all 36 of Stanford’s varsity teams dedicated to reinstating the 11 recently cut varsity sports. They are leveraging PR strategies to put pressure on the Board of Trustees and increase awareness within the Stanford community, so that at the next board meeting Stanford admin will listen to us and reconsider their decision. A portion of the funds donated here will go directly towards 36 Sports Strong and their efforts to show the Stanford Board of Trustees that these cuts are a terrible decision for Stanford.
Second, we believe that there is a strong legal case to reinstate the teams. If you would like more specific details on the case, please reach out. The funds that are not distributed to the 36 Sports Strong will instead help this effort.
