Save the Allerton Road Oaks
Donation protected
We are raising funds to help save one of the 3 remaining oak trees of Stoke Newington’s ancient woodland located in the rear gardens between Allerton Road, Lordship Park and Queen Elizabeth Walk. These majestic trees have been standing for hundreds of years and form part of an important wildlife corridor between Woodberry Wetlands and Clissold Park, home to a diverse range of wildlife including tawny owls, woodpeckers and bats.
A loss adjustor has got permission to fell one of the trees because of a subsidence claim, yet two independent arboricultural reports conclude this tree has only a minor influence on the subsidence and that natural swelling and shrinkage of the ground exacerbated by climate change is more likely the main cause.
Subsidence-related tree felling by insurance companies has rocketed in the last 20 years. The causes of subsidence are complex, but insurers often demand the felling of nearby mature trees as a first step since it costs them nothing.
Having removed Hackney council's Tree Preservation Order (TPO 06/2017) on this oak, the loss adjusters hope to get away with basic remedial works and avoid proper underpinning that would make felling this tree unnecessary.
We need these funds urgently to commission an independent structural engineer's survey to protect the rights of the tree.
Clissold Park, the Woodbury Wetlands and Abney cemetery make up a triangle recognized by Hackney council as part of their emerging Nature Recovery Plan and this tree is in the center!
We are grateful for your support in saving the last remaining oaks trees of Stoke Newington’s ancient woodland. #saveAllertonOaks
Our cause is supported by SHIFT (Stop Home Insurers Felling Trees), a pressure group to protect trees from being destroyed due to insurance claims. #SHIFT_Hackney #SHIFT_Haringey #shiftharingey
We need signatures to tell Sedgwick and Hackney Council that this tree must stay!
