Save the Ancient Moorish Water System La Acequia
Donation protected
Hello. You may have seen recently on SM and the news about the huge fire that raged in the mountains behind La Herradura, Granada.
We live in the valley of Rio Jate. A lot of our neighbours have lost their fruit trees (avocados, chirimoyas, almond, olive etc) and along with them, their source of income.
The ancient Moorish water irrigation system called La Acequia, has been damaged and desperately needs repairing. This water system helps the farmers to irrigate their farms and is a vital water source for many. Without this, it will be hard for the farmers to replant and replenish even a fraction of what has been lost.
I have set this GoFundMe up to raise funds to put towards the repair of the Acequia. It will cost thousands so I have put a "wish" or goal of 1000 euros.
If you are able to help by even donating a fiver, we would be so very grateful.
Many thanks from myself and our Rio Jate neighbours.
Sending love

UPDATE: 3RD SEPTEMBER 2024
Thank YOU ALL for being so supportive and generous in your donation gifting! We raised 2220 and a few hundred also at our place of work.
Work on the acequia looks like realistically starting at the end of September/into October.
The reason for the delay is that the farmers are working tirelessly to clear their lands of the dead wood and burnt out trees and saving whatever they can. This is a crucial step in the reforestation of their farms.
It isn't a quick job and also they want to see how the land is after the next rain. We had rain and that dampened the dust and ash down a bit. They are concerned about landslides with the lack of trees to support the hillside.
Anyway, as soon as we have the go ahead and we can (as a community here in Rio Jate) get together to do the work ourselves, I will film every step of the way and add it to FB and Instagram for you to see. If you are not on social media please send me an email and I will send you the videos.
Thank you so much again.
With love from myself and the Rio Jate farmers
