Hi there.
We have been doing some important work in the Bendigo community running the Bendigo Stroke Support Centre. Since the Stroke Association of Victoria ceased operating the Centre due to lack of funding we have kept our Centre running with volunteers.
Our group has regular members who visit the Centre on a daily basis and are considered like family. It is a safe space where our members can talk freely knowing there is no judgement. We run indoor and outdoor activities including walking groups, meditation, men's and ladies groups and an aphasia communication group which sometimes links in with universities conducting studies on aphasia.
Our Centre is so important not only to the stroke survivor but to the carers and families who have had their life turned upside down. Without our Centre there is an extra strain on the already over burdened hospital system and the mental health of our members will take a dive. We will not allow that to happen!!
Our Centre also helps by:
- Providing group support from fellow stroke survivors and their carers
- Engaging stroke survivors back into the community
- Reducing social isolation
- Having a positive impact on the mental health of stroke survivors
Please donate to help keep our Centre running so that we can eventually employ a Coordinator to further our relationship with Bendigo Health and set up a referral program. That would mean when Stroke Survivors are discharged from Hospital we can support them to avoid falling into that black hole of depression.
A Coordinator could also develop different programs and outings to encourage mental and physical activity.
