Help Save Black Cat!

Donation protected
Together we have an opportunity to SAVE THE BLACK CAT - a GREAT co-operative vegan café with loyal customers and a supportive community.

We have already raised over £30,000 in donations, merchandise sales and low-interest loans.

Ideally, we need to raise a further £70,000 of donations to pay for refurbishment, new equipment, business debts and debts owed to Nacho and Carla - who have led Black Cat for ten years.

At an absolute minimum, we need a further £40,000 to begin Black Cat's new phase!

DONATE BELOW TO HELP US DO JUST THAT!

Black Cat is one of the UK's longest-running and most loved vegan cafés. Based in the heart of Hackney, we serve delicious and affordable healthy vegan lunches and snacks.

As a not-for-profit co-operative café, Black Cat provides a safe, inclusive, socially vibrant, and welcoming community hub. It hosts local events and regular charity fundraisers and doubles as a destination for London and visiting vegans.
Black Cat Cafe is a place where vegan projects and campaigns are dreamt up, planned and tested. … Let’s keep it that way!

PLEASE USE THE BUTTON BELOW TO DONATE!

After ten years of hard work, dedication and investment to refurbish the café, building up sales from £60k to over £300k, our two main staff members - Nacho and Carla - are stepping down to return to Spain.

We scaled back café hours post pandemic, to give staff a break, but our customers want more events, longer hours, and more services. So as Nacho and Carla leave we are looking to offer more products and services to our customers, local people and the wider vegan community.

We have identified a core team to potentially replace Carla and Nacho.

PLEASE DONATE TO HELP US OFFER JOBS TO THIS TEAM!

Together, we can raise the funds to scale-up the café with the same not-for-profit, community ethos but with a new team, a refreshed offer and a wider range of vegan-friendly services.

Carla and Nacho want to pass over the café as a vibrant business so that the new team can make a fresh start. To help the campaign, Nacho and Carla have generously offered to forgive some of the debts owed to them.

But we would prefer to repay them all they invested.

Help us raise the remaining £70,000 so we can do that.

WHO IS BLACK CAT
Emmaz Social Club Limited, founded in 2001, is a not-for-profit co-operative society registered with the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority). “Emmaz” has operated Black Cat as a vegan Café (and its vegetarian predecessor Pogo Café) for over two decades.

We seek additional volunteer directors to help steer this amazing vegan business for the next few years. Please contact us if you are interested.

Help us ensure Black Cat survives this transition and thrives for another decade.

We have raised over £30,000 of low-interest loans, donations and merchandise sales. Once a further £10,000 has been raised, we shall begin to move funds into the “Emmaz Social Club Limited” bank account.

WHO IS BEHIND THIS CROWDFUNDER
We are a group of twenty members, customers and supporters who have come together to help steer Black Cat Café through this transition, raise the necessary funds and recruit the best people to take Black Cat forward.

But we cannot achieve this without your donations and involvement.

Black Cat's mission is:
“... to be a safe, inclusive, socially vibrant, viable and sustainable café where vegans, freethinkers and others can express themselves and associate freely while eating healthy plant-based food. Black Cat generates income through a combination of café sales, catering, events, pop-ups and other collaboration alongside community fundraising, grants and donations.”

Your funds and support will help us to deliver this mission.
