Save The Boards To Memorialize The Movement

Donation protected
Save The Boards To Memorialize The Movement is a project dedicated to the preservation and accessibility of the plywood art murals that were created in response to the murder of George Floyd and the protests that followed. We are raising money for an outdoor exhibition of the boards that will be free and accessible to the community. We hope to create a safe and inclusive space for people to reflect on the events that occured here this summer and ensure that we keep this civil rights movement going through this art.

Save The Boards Minneapolis (“STB”) and Memorialize The Movement (“MTM”) are collaborating to preserve the plywood art murals that were created after the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent protests. Our goal is to ensure that these plywood murals are preserved and remain accessible to Black communities in the Twin Cities. Save The Boards was created by Kenda Zellner-Smith and Memorialize The Movement was created by Leesa Kelly.

While preserving this artwork is a labor of love, it is work that requires resources to carry out this mission. We are currently raising money for a climate controlled storage space for the murals as well as supplies to preserve the paint and keep the wood from warping and/or splintering. This preservation project will continue into 2021. We are working tirelessly with community organizations and leaders to find a permanent home for the art  where they will be free and accessible to people, but we realize that it may be a few years before we see a permanent home for the artwork.

Currently STB and MTM are collaborating with the Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery (MAAHMG) to create an annual exhibition featuring the plywood art murals that were created after the killing of George Floyd and the subsequent protests. An exhibition will be tentatively planned for the last week of May 2021. Through this exhibition we hope to offer the community a chance to reflect and heal from the trauma of police brutality and systemic racism.

The movement is here and Minneapolis is the epicenter. We will not let this story be forgotten.
