Save the Butterflies
Butterflies need our help more than ever. Together we can make a difference… If you could make a donation to this project, it could be a sanctuary and teaching garden for butterflies for years to come.
A few years ago I started a journey of discovery. I built a garden around my house/ business for the butterflies but there were none. I was devastated!
The first butterfly to discover my garden was a Monarch Butterfly at the end of summer. She laid 17 butterfly eggs!! Success!! I went out to inspect them all but 3 were gone. I knew now that part of the problem was they had issues surviving. I discovered only 1 in 100 eggs live to be a butterfly.
I started looking around town for milkweed only to find it one day and gone the next to mowing etc. So I started a champaign to get people onboard with helping the butterflies. It was a success!
I used my garden to teach people and after awhile people reported whole neighborhoods were getting involved.
My numbers reflected the change in butterfly recovery for this area. The first year there were 26 butterflies for the season, 56 the next year, 104 butterflies the following year, 240 butterflies the next and consistently 1700 for the past 3 years each year.
Covid19 has been a blessing and a curse. Last summer I spent more time in the garden because I could not be open as the shop is a small space and social distancing is not possible. So consequently I discovered 11 species of butterflies using the plants and "weeds".
The curse is that I'm losing the business/house to Covid19. So I have been desperately trying to find a place for the Butterflies as to not lose the progress of the past 14 years.
I had a "Green Light" moment a few weeks ago when I found 6.5 acres on Pelee Island. It was perfect! It is the first and last place in Canada to see the migrating Butterflies!!!
Please help if you can... I finally feel alive again with hope and purpose...But I definitely need a village to help make this happen. I can't do this alone.
Any donation will be greatly appreciated to help create this very special place for our generation
and future generations to enjoy.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart,
Cherie
