Including You is a non-profit dedicated to providing educational opportunities to undeserved communities. Founded by 11 year-old Daisy Hampton during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, our goal is to bring equality and equity to children across the globe. Due to the success of our first fundraiser, and in response to an enormous amount of requests for devices from the New York City area, we have started this special fundraising campaign to send New York students laptops and hotspots. Including You loves NY!
Our Story:
Meet Daisy. Daisy is an 11-year-old from New York City. She loves TikTok, Starbucks, and playing with her furry friend, Maddie the dog. This past spring when COVID-19 swept across the nation and schools were forced to shutter their doors for safety, Daisy and her peers were hastily uprooted from their schools and placed into distance learning. Schools across the nation followed suit, and thus began the widening of the digital divide.
With the world in turmoil, Daisy began to notice more and more of her classmates going quiet. She wasn’t seeing them online. Their attendance in class was declining. And Daisy was not alone in this experience. In April of 2020, the DOE reported that 16% of NYC public students were not engaging in their distance learning classes. In a system of nearly 1.1 million students, this was not a number to take lightly.
After weeks of witnessing the access to education decline, Daisy decided to take action, and attack the problem at its roots. She founded Including You, a non-profit dedicated to providing accessible education and programs to students that are traditionally underserved.
She built up an organization that reached students who were at risk of falling dangerously behind in their schooling. Forming a peer-to-peer mentorship program, hosting free cultural programs and classes, and fundraising were all a part of the Including You mission.
Through her passion and outreach, she was able to donate over 25 devices to underserved families.
Recently, Daisy saw an article in the local paper describing the struggles of a young student in the Bronx , Kimani. Kimani’s mother was in danger of being reported to child services for educational neglect- due to the fact that their DOE issued iPad was broken, despite months of requests for a replacement. Kimani was unable to attend all her classes, and needed to share a single computer with her brother, causing conflicts when the children’s class schedules overlapped.
Daisy reached out to the Daily News, and was able to get Kimani’s contact information. She didn’t want any child to not only miss out on their education, but also have to worry about CPS and educational truancy. With their help, she was able to meet up with Kimani and her mother, and presented them with a brand new laptop. Kimani was on and connected for her classes the very next day .
Kimani’s story is unfortunately far too common these days, and we aim to change that. 77,000 students in the DOE for New York City do not have access to laptops , tablets, and/or proper wifi in order to maintain distance learning. So now Daisy and Including You are bringing the focus to New York City, with the goal of providing devices to students all over the city in need. Your donation to this campaign will go directly into purchasing these devices, and providing them to the students most in need. Daisy, Kimani, and the 77,000 thousand students of this city thank you.
We are New York strong, and we are ready to get the children of this city back on track and set up for the bright future they deserve!
