Save Marbled Murrelet and their nests, Old Growth
Donation protected
Welcome to Friends of Fairy Creek (FOFC) GoFundMe page. We are an organization of concerned community members and scientists who have filed an Action in the Supreme Court of British Columbia to save the Marbled Murrelet (MaMu) and its nesting habitat, Old Growth trees. This species and other species as well as their habitats are specifically protected under the Migratory Birds Treaty, the Migratory Birds Convention Act and Migratory Birds Regulations. There is no exception, the bird and its habitat must be preserved because they don’t build a nest. The Old Growth tree stands are their nests. This is true for other protected species as well. The ancient trees must be preserved or many species will face extinction. If successful, our Court action, now on Appeal, will protect MaMu and other at risk Old Growth dependent species that inhabit the last unlogged watershed of Old Growth trees at Fairy Creek on South Vancouver Island. There are also other stands of Old Growth trees elsewhere that will likely be protected as well if the Appellate Court in Canada finds that these three bodies of law make it unlawful to harvest Old Growth trees because of the mandate for their protection and preservation of the habitats of the Treaty, Convention Act and Migratory Bird Regulations designated species. The laws of Canada and the Province make it illegal to damage, dismantle or destroy their nesting habitats which are undeniably the Old Growth tree stands.
Your contribution will help Friends of Fairy Creek protect and preserve the Marbled Murrelet by saving the remaining Old Growth forests, particularly by preserving Fairy Creek, one of the last intact Old Growth forests on South Vancouver Island.
The Marbled Murrelet relies on Old Growth as it falls from flight to nest and lay its one egg per year on the mossy upper platform limbs of Old Growth tree stands.
