Save the Lake Hall School
Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to save The Lake Hall School, which appears to be the oldest African American One-Room-School House in the state. Any donation will help make an impact.
Our Recent Efforts
We were successful in having the building placed on the Local Register, and that keeps it from being torn down. The Trust for Public Land purchased and is holding a perfect lot for us. We were to extend that lot to include the school. But One issue was that the building sits on two lots. We have yet to get an answer as to why this happened... and why it can't be fixed.
IN THE MEANTIME,
The owners of the two lots were to sign a Boundary Settlement Document. We had the fees waived, and the owners have had the document for over a Year. Last week the owners decided they wanted to be paid. We were blindsided by this, and now we have to move our efforts into hyperdrive.
You will notice that I am using my B Sharps Non Profit because The Friends Of The Lake Hall School Non Profit, while approved by the state, has not come back from the IRS as yet. The application is still in the process. Your contributions will be tax deductible because B Sharps is a 501c3 and is a culturally anchored non profit. But we can't wait any longer. The school is in danger
The School is a National Treasure and must be saved. The history here is priceless and has yet to be acknowledged or studied. Many of the Former Students at the School live locally and are willing to tell their story. It's also rare to have such a Treasure still on the exact same spot after 150 years. And, After some 150 years, look at it. It's in incredible condition. We can't let developers come in and devour the history; we have to act.
So, We need to end this uncertainty. We need to buy-out the owners; pay back the Trust for Public Land for the property that the school will be absorbed into; and, get started on the restoration. We want to open to the public. We want to provide appropriate programming about the lived experiences in the school. There is so much to learn and celebrate here. We MUST ACT, NOW!!
Thanks in advance for your contributions to this cause which should mean so much to this community and the state.
