I'm a volunteer at the Las Vegas Chess Center (http://www.lasvegaschesscenter.com/), the 501(c)3 organization run by Juan and Sabrina Jauregui that is the heart and soul of chess in Las Vegas. I'm writing this on behalf of the Jaureguis who will receive any funds raised by this campaign.
Covid-19 has put the Chess Center on halt and without support, it will not be able to reopen. Back rent during the closure, and no tournaments or program donations coming in, as well as maintenance and operating costs have piled up and we aren't sure how to get out of this predicament like many others businesses and organizations. I've put together this page to raise money to cover the Center's back rent and costs to re-open the center in a safe way with personal protective equipment and hygiene protocols in place.
The Center is a place for anyone to learn and improve at chess, to play rated tournaments, and to teach and learn about the beautiful game of chess, and to support and foster Las Vegas' chess community. The Center does everything from running after-school programs and children's camps, to tutoring and training, to open hours for meet-ups and games, to hosting events and chess masters from around the world.
This newspaper article from 2016 on the Center (https://www.reviewjournal.com/local/local-las-vegas/downtown/las-vegas-chess-center-creates-gathering-place-for-all-ages/) still holds true or at least it did until covid-19 put things on hold.
Juan and Sabrina have put everything they can into the Center and the community for many years now. I've seen them volunteer countless hours to create a home for chess in Las Vegas. Numerous masters and chess aficionados have visited and continue to support the club because it is run with integrity and kindheartedness. Let's help them out and save the Center. Without it, a part of the community and culture that is developing in Las Vegas will be lost.
