Help the Mercer Café Family Survive!
Twenty years ago, Mercer Café opened as an ice cream and coffee shop in the amazing neighborhood of Port Richmond. Owned and operated by native Tom Woltjen and his family, Mercer Café has since become an institution in the neighborhood- the place you go where everyone knows your name.
Known for its home made breakfast and lunch specialties, Mercer is the kind of place where you become like a member of the family and not just a customer. The place where you see the same smiling servers- some whom have been there from opening day- who know your name and your favorite thing to eat.
This is the kind of place that will bend over backwards to keep their guests happy, and if they don't have something on the menu, they will get it- and then name it after you and put it on the menu!
In 2015, Mercer Café opened a second location in the Philadelphia Navy Yard, where they also serve brick oven pizza and offer an extensive catering facility.
A staple in the community, Mercer has always been there for its patrons by supporting neighborhood fundraisers and events. We have seen families grow, watched babies take their first steps and bites of pancakes, hosted and catered your special occasions, and laughed and cried with our patrons. We know each others stories and we take care of each other.
In what should have been an amazing year for us as we celebrated our 20th anniversary, we find ourselves struggling amongst the Covid Pandemic to make ends meet. With the regulations that were set in place during quarantine, The Port Richmond location could only offer take-out until last month when we were able to offer dine in at 50% Capacity. If you know Mercer, you know we are a small café that only has 11 tables, so operating on half of that and continuing to pay the bills has not been an easy feat.
The Navy Yard location was forced to close completely for two months since the population of workers there were all working from home, and most likely will be until sometime next year. They have since reopened but are barely surviving with 90% of its customers not working on location.
After 20 years of business in the neighborhood we love so much, we would hate to have to close our doors forever. We are asking our loyal supporters for your help so we can continue to keep our doors open and do what we love!
