The teaching and study of Black history is the teaching and study of world history.
Support MRes and PhD students and their fight against the University of Chichester, to reinstate the course suspended arbitrarily and abruptly without consultation in breach of the Equality Act 2010.
We now need your contributions to further propel this fight to the end. The funds raised will be used in part to support students affected by the university's actions and toward legal expenses.
PLEASE DONATE.
We invite you to follow the campaign developments via the dedicated History Matters webpage.

ANNOUNCEMENT:
We are excited to announce that Professor Hakim Adi has been shortlisted for the Wolfson History prize, the most prestigious History prize in the U.K! Our Announcement on this amazing accomplishment can be found here.
UPDATE:
An update after Chichester University closed the MRes History of Africa and the African Diaspora course. Due to this development, our funding principles have had to change.
Professor Adi has been made redundant as of the 31st of August 2023, effectively closing the MRes, this decision was made by the university.
Our Press Statement on Professor Hakim Adi being made redundant can be found here.
In the lead up to as well as after this decision was made, the University and College Union, the trade union for further and higher education, haven't given their FULL support, nor have they provided ANY legal advice to Professor Adi. As a result of this, Professor Adi needs legal representation which will require funding.
The decision has also affected and continues to affect, the mental health of students who have been directly impacted, because of the position of uncertainty they are placed in. Your donation will also go towards providing mental health support to students.
Finally, this decision by Chichester University violates the Equality Act 2010. As both students and Professor Adi were not spoken too. Due to this, we require legal funding to challenge Chichester’s unlawful decision.
Help Support Our Fight! Your Donations will go towards:
- Supporting Our Students and their legal fight against Chichester University, who have failed to comply with the Equality Act 2010
- Supporting Professor Adi who has been made redundant and requires legal representation
- Supporting our course transfer process
- And providing mental health support to students
Hear Our Students:
“We were mortified that one, we were in the middle of a course, the University decided to stop taking students, and make the course leader redundant. Which in our view shows no consideration” – Leanard Phillip, MRes Student
Regarding the future of their PhD, A.S. Francis, a PHD student, says: “At this point I can’t answer that. I actually don’t know.”
“I’m just wondering why a British university, would want to stop people from knowing about their history” - Petra Toyin Haynes, MRes Student
