REPAIRING 'SHERMAN PARK RISING'
*Update: Thanks to all who helped us reach our goal! Continued donations will go towards lift rental and restoration that will be ongoing.* Water damage from a hole in the roof getting through the brick wall has caused this community mural to prematurely crack and peel in some places. It is savable, but the leaky roof and holes had to be patched and sealed as soon as possible or the mural would have been beyond repair within a year of creating this fundraiser. A contractor assessed the damage and gave an estimate which has been covered by this fundraiser.
WHO IS BENEFITTING
- The funds raised cover a professional roof and masonry contractor to fix the holes to prevent further water damage
- The remaining money goes towards paying a crew of artists to help me touchup the cracks and repaint the damaged areas, plus materials required. Touchups are ongoing, being done over time to prolong the life of the mural
- Any maintenance and touchups I am doing myself are a labor of love. No funds will be going towards my own labor and time
I will be grateful for help getting these repairs done. One reason is because so many people have been touched by the mural. There were so many of those touching moments that got captured in a short (25min) documentary you can learn about on my website. You can watch it here:

From people who were part of the mural, to people who were moved by the images at film screenings and then asked me to do something similar in their own communities - the benefits of this mural go far beyond its immediate location. Documentation and some media coverage below show it has impacted many people. That's why I want to save it.

THE HISTORY OF THE MURAL
In June of 2016 I was offered the opportunity to do a beautification mural that would have some community engagement in the Sherman Park neighborhood of Milwaukee, WI. The work was started and finished the following year, from June-September of 2017. As a community mural artist, I approached this project in a way that offered residents a chance to express their feelings - their challenges; ways they felt those could be improved and the future. I only expected a handful of participants, but we got more than 150 people to come out and help design and paint the mural!
This went beyond my hopes as a symbol of community transformation. It has given back to more people and in more ways than I ever thought possible. I have come to realize it is a foundational piece of my work as a community artist - and I'm still learning from it!
Supporting this fundraiser today means it can keep giving to people for more years to come. I appreciate any amount of help you can contribute towards that effort!
Thanks to all for your support!
