Save the Treetops Kitty Cafe!!

The non-profit Treetops Kitty Café in Kennett Square, PA opened in August 2017 as a program for the Tree Tops Animal Rescue a 501c3 since 2006.  Although the rescue accepts donations, receives an adoption fee for each animal adopted, and the Kitty Café brings in revenue from entrance fees and retails sales, these have not been enough to cover the operating costs of the Café over its first year.  Keeping the Treetops Kitty Café open and continuing to save cats and contribute to our local community will depend heavily on our ability to generate sufficient funds in donations, sponsorships, and grants.

Tree Tops Animal Rescue was established in Chester County, PA in 2006 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue network of foster homes.    Until August 2017, Tree Tops operated without a physical facility using only unpaid volunteers and foster homes, during which we adopted out over 1700 animals, mostly dogs and cats, but also some goats, rabbits, and more.  In addition, we helped find homes for hundreds of others through courtesy listings and provided help for vet care for other animals in need.

In 2017, Tree Tops decided to concentrate our efforts solely on cats and started a new program, the Treetops Kitty Café.  Cat overpopulation is a serious problem nationwide, with cats being given away and euthanized by the thousands especially during kitten season in the summer and our cats come to us mostly from large overcrowded animal control shelters we partner with in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and South Carolina.  By having a comfortable place where people can come visit the cats and get to know them, the Treetops Kitty Café has been successful in doubling the number of cats placed.

As one of the only cat cafés in our area, in our first year we have attracted thousands of visitors from a 2-hour radius of Kennett Square.   The Kitty Café provides a therapeutic environment for people of all ages who can enjoy spending time surrounded by and playing with friendly cats of all ages.  This is a particularly unique opportunity for those who cannot have their own cats, such as those who have family members with cat allergies, whose living situations do not allow pets, or those who have conditions that are not amenable to pet ownership (the Kitty Café is handicap accessible).   We charge a fee to enter the kitty lounge and we offer discounts for seniors, students, duos (an adult with a dependent), and families.

The Treetops Kitty Café has a full-time manager & assistant manager and is open to the public 6 days per week, with certain hours set aside for private or special events.  As a non-profit we rely heavily on our volunteers who sign up to come in and help out on different days, caring for the cats, serving as ambassadors to visitors in the lounge, fostering cats in their homes, or helping at special events.  Our volunteers range from younger children who volunteer with a parent, to senior citizens, and include several with conditions such as autism or Down’s syndrome.  In addition, the Kennett Friends senior living home periodically fosters mom cats with kittens until they’re ready to come to the Cafe, which brings enjoyment to the residents, staff, and their visitors.

Being part of the community is important to us, which is why we have joined local business organizations and taken part in local community events and activities.  We offer special events several times a month, including a monthly storytime for preschoolers and activities such as painting nights and cat-oriented crafts. The Café can be reserved for small private events outside of our regular hours and is becoming a popular place for cat lovers to hold parties.

New small businesses always have a financial struggle during their first few years of operation, even more so for a small non-profit animal rescue.  Please help support us so we can continue and grow in our ability to rescue cats and help our community.
