Hello friends and family of the UCSB Surf Team! We come to you humbly asking for support to keep this team running (as we know it). Our funding from UCSB was cut in half this year and we are now in a position where we are not only struggling to fund our B Team, but will likely have to eliminate our C Team altogether.
For anyone that's known our team over the past couple of years, we have grown to have a reputation at contests. Despite our team's extensive history of championship wins, this reputation has almost nothing to do with athletic prowess. On the contrary, our team has a reputation for good spirit.
At any given contest, you can spot our team immediately. There is always A) double to triple the amount of surfers, teammates, and supporters as there are actual surf competitors, B) a landmine of music speakers, beach chairs, and snacks, and most importantly C) a very, very stoked group of surfers.
So much of what has kept this good spirit alive is that we have had the funding to support many skill levels of surfers--A team, B team, and C team. Our top priority has been to give as many surfers as possible a chance to compete and feel like a true part of our team.
When we pick our freshman during fall tryouts, we don't look for perfection. We look for the surfers with great attitudes and dedication to the sport. With three teams and many competition slots, we have the privilege of picking surfers who sometimes have quite a bit of room to grow. This has made competitions a really safe, fun space for us, rather than the tense and aggressive space that they can often turn into. We are a team that is proud to continually learn and grow together.
Our surf family is big and chaotic and loving and we want to keep it that way. Please, please, please help us continue this tradition of stoke and donate to keep the C team alive!
