Save Thong Khoun – A Future for Laos' Elephants

In Laos, for every ten elephants that die, only one is born—a heartbreaking trend that puts the species on the brink of extinction.

Together, we can change this. Meet Thong Khoun, a magnificent male Asian elephant with the potential to alter the course of history. Once a logging elephant, his life took an uncertain turn when the industry was banned, leaving him and his mahout without purpose. Later rented to a tourist camp as a stud, Thong Khoun now faces an uncertain future yet again.

The Elephant Conservation Center (ECC) in Laos, in partnership with France-based NGO "Des Eléphants & Des Hommes," envisions a vital role for Thong Khoun in our breeding program. His proven genetics, dominant personality, and breeding history make him an ideal candidate. However, if we don’t act now, his owner will sell him to another tourist camp, where his potential will be wasted.

We aim to raise $35,000 to bring Thong Khoun into the ECC family permanently. Here, he will live with dignity, contributing to the survival of his species in a natural setting with 27 other elephants.

Au Laos, pour 10 éléphants qui meurent, un seul naît. À ce rythme, la survie de l’espèce est gravement menacée. Mais ensemble, nous pouvons inverser la tendance.

Voici Thong Khoun, un majestueux éléphant mâle d’Asie qui a le potentiel de tout changer. Autrefois employé dans l’exploitation forestière, sa vie a basculé lorsque l'utilisation d'éléphants pour le débardage a été interdite, le laissant, lui et son cornac, sans emploi. Plus tard, il a été loué à un camp touristique, où il a été utilisé comme étalon. Aujourd’hui, son avenir est à nouveau incertain.

Le Centre de conservation des éléphants (ECC) au Laos et l'association française "Des Eléphants & Des Hommes" ont un projet pour Thong Khoun : lui donner le premier rôle dans notre programme de reproduction qui contribue à assurer la survie de cette espèce en voie de disparition. Son patrimoine génétique, son potentiel avéré en matière de reproduction et sa personnalité en font un candidat idéal. Mais si nous n’agissons pas maintenant, son propriétaire le vendra à un autre camp touristique, où son potentiel ne sera pas exploité.

Pourquoi c’est important

La reproduction des éléphants au Laos est vitale pour l'espèce. La population est en baisse, les naissances étant bien trop rares pour assurer la survie des générations futures. Thong Khoun pourrait être la clé pour inverser cette tendance, mais nous ne pouvons y parvenir sans votre aide.

L’objectif

Nous devons réunir 35 000 $ pour acheter Thong Khoun et l’intégrer définitivement dans la famille ECC. Ici, il vivra dignement dans un environnement naturel entouré de 27 autres éléphants et contribuera directement à la sauvegarde de sa propre espèce.

Si nous ne parvenons pas à sécuriser Thong Khoun, il sera vendu à un camp touristique, où son potentiel à aider son espèce sera perdu. Il ne s’agit pas seulement d’un éléphant, mais de l’avenir de tous les éléphants du Laos.
