Save Vancouver's Oldest Building & Museum!
134 years ago today survivors of Vancouver's great fire of 1886 took refuge in Hasting's Mill Store. The building survived and exists today as the Old Hasting's Mill Store Museum. Built in 1868 ...Times are difficult for Old Hastings Mill Store Museum at present. We have no confirmation of our annual operating grant from the City of Vancouver, which we normally receive in early May, and do not anticipate any financial assistance from the City in the foreseeable future.
To compound matters, we have just completed our Capitol Project, consisting of a new fire escape to meet current City Code specifications, replacement of a rotting north deck and leaning chimney, and new guttering system. Everything looks great but our cash reserves have been drastically depleted. Of course we never anticipated a worldwide pandemic when we undertook these projects!
Worst case scenario would be that we would have to shutter the museum by September without further funds to cover basic costs such as heat, light, water, insurance and our security system.
Anything that you could do to raise awareness of Vancouver’s oldest building and its present situation would be so well appreciated. We are hoping to open for a shortened summer season by July 1, 1 – 4 pm daily except Mondays. Many of our volunteers are seniors and unable to staff, so we are looking for trustworthy volunteers.
Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to benefit THE FRIENDS OF THE OLD HASTINGS MILL STORE MUSEUM, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
