Amharic Version
We have created this page in hope of gaining your support to help successfully overcome the serious threat of losing our Church and communal home.
Our Church Debre Tsion St. Mary of London was established back in 1976 by the Ethiopian diaspora in the United Kingdom (some of whom were forced to flee their homeland due to their opposition of the ruling Ethiopian regime).
For over 40 years, this church has been serving Ethiopians, Caribbean’s and the wider community in the UK both spiritually and culturally.
After 32 years of renting various places of worship in London; in 2007 we, the members of the church were able to secure a permanent home for our Church Debre Tsion St. Mary at St Phillips Square through tireless fundraising efforts, as well as donations which also included personal treasures.
It should be noted that Abune Paulos had made attempts to stop the completion of purchase from the Church of England as this Church did not fall under his administration (You can learn more about the controversy surrounding the appointment of Abune Paulos, and the divisions that has followed within the Ethiopian Orthodox church here ).
Since 2013 there has been a dispute over the administration of the church between members and some clergy. Having lost the confidence of members of the church, these clergy were determined to hand over the day to day control and assets of the church to the Ethiopian Synod.
In order to avert the threatened handover of the church ownership, to a jurisdiction outside the United Kingdom and away from the members who exclusively funded the purchase of our church, we have set up a Save St. Mary Debre Tsion Church campaign and have been fighting the case in the High Court for the last 4 years. Our hearing at the High Courts will take place in June 2017.
In the name of almighty God and the Virgin Mary we appeal to you all as we are in desperate need of funds in order to help cover court fees, save our church and keep it in the hands of those that have sacrificed so much.
Thank you and God bless
