In 1958, Rabbi Meier Schimmel ז״ל with a few other families founded the first Studio City Synagogue, now known as Congregation Beth Meier named after the biblical writer and scholar Rabbi Meier Baal Ha Ness. The name means “the illuminator” and Rabbi Schimmel ז״ל hoped Congregation Beth Meier would bring light to everyone in the community.
The congregation met in the rabbi's backyard and eventually moved to its current location in a small but welcoming building in Studio City. For well over 50 years Beth Meier served the local Jewish community through programs, classes, activities, and especially weekly and holiday services. Beth Meier is truly a House of God. Members and first time visitors are always welcomed and everyone is made to feel like part of a big extended family. Our outreach efforts encourage all members of the community, regardless of faith, to pray in our sanctuary.
In 2008, with the crash of the economy, everything changed. The first groups to feel the effect of this were non-profit and religious organizations, and Beth Meier was no exception.
Over the past seven years our survival required severe cost cutting including raising membership dues, and cutting back on community services and activities. With wages flat and confidence in government wavering, many people, especially those on fixed incomes, just could not afford to continue to financially participate. Although they were never turned away because of this, many who wanted to join Beth Meier could not due to these financial reasons.
Beth Meier strives to embrace the best of Conservative Jewish values, offering innovation and change while still maintaining a forum for those values.
Our future depends on your contributions. We need to increase membership and also continue to support those congregants who cannot afford to be members. It will also once again allow us to completely serve the needs of our community.
YOUR TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN AND CONGREGATION BETH MEIER WILL CONTINUE TO BE A BEACON OF LIGHT FOR EVERYONE AS IT WAS ENVISIONED NEARLY 60 YEARS AGO BY THAT SMALL GROUP OF PIONEERS.
