Save Blacktown Puppies

Donation protected
Each year, dogs throughout Australia are sadly put down because they have parvovirus and this campaign aims to change that at Blacktown pound. Parvovirus is a deadly and highly contagious disease that can kill dogs within just 72 hours of symptoms showing. But when treated, a dog has an 80-95% chance of surviving. So it makes sense to simply treat it and save these puppies from unecessary death. But we need your help to do this...

It will cost about $1000 per dog with parvovirus at Blacktown pound to treat and based on last years statistics, it is estimated that there will be approximately 20 dogs (mostly pups) that will need to be treated this parvo season which we expect to start around November. This means we need to raise $20,000.

Why is this needed?
When a dog in an animal shelter has parvovirus, it is often a death sentence because pounds don't usually have the funding available (about $1k per dog with parvovirus) to treat the disease and most rescue groups don't immediately have the money or quarantine facilities to treat it. Blacktown pound are just like us and they welcome ideas to help save more animals at their facility. Some dogs may enter a pound with parvovirus incubating and it can take up to 10 days for symptoms to show, making it difficult to contain in some cases.

We have the support and backup of dog rescue groups including Monika's Rescue, Paws N Hooves, Wally's Dog Rescue, Rocky's K9 Rescue, Australian Working Dog Rescue, Wollongong Animal Rescue Network Inc., SLK Cattle Dog Rescue, Bull Arab Rescue and Labrador Rescue who are willing to work with Blacktown pound to help save these precious lives.

Why Blacktown Pound?
We have a strong relationship with Blacktown pound and we see them as a proactive pound, leading the way in helping save animals from euthenasia. We are proud that they are allowing us to work with them to further reduce their dog euthenasia rate, which is already one of the lowest in the world for a pound that must accept all stray animals from various councils.

How The Funds Will Be Used
All funds raised will be spent directly on vet bills for the dogs to be treated for parvovirus so they have their best chance to survive. In most cases, the vet used will be decided by the rescue group who will be rescuing the dog after being treated at the vet, for approximately a week. Funds will not be used for other vet work such as desexing, vaccination, surgery etc.

Will there be a maximum vet bill per dog?
The maximum vet bill that will be paid from this campaign per dog will be $1,300. Any additional costs to treat parvovirus in a single dog would not be paid for from funds in this campaign (unless we exceed our funding target).

Will the money raised also be used for other pounds?
Edit: Due to the lack of parvovirus cases in 2017 at Blacktown pound, we have extended our offer to assist dogs at Campbelltown pound if any have parvovirus and are impounded at their facility.

The money raised from this campaign is intended to only be used for dogs with parvovirus at Blacktown Animal Holding Facility (pound). Dogs that may need other urgent vet work or treatment for parvovirus (including but not limited to dogs with owners, other pounds or rescue groups) will not receive funding from this campaign.

What if the funding target is exceeded? What will happen to excess funds?
It will certainly get quite a lot of tails wagging! Excess funds will be used to help other Blacktown dogs and cats leave the pound (transport costs or medical treatment).

Are Blacktown pound willing to work with us?
Yes! We have discussed this project in great detail with Brandon the Rehoming Officer at Blacktown pound and he strongly supports this campaign. He has assisted us greatly with the logistics and rescue contacts to make this happen.

Logistics
When a dog that is suspected to have parvovirus arrives (or is already) at Blacktown pound, the dog is taken to a vet by the pound staff to get tested. If the dog tests positive for parvovirus and the vet states that the dog will likely survive if treated (in some cases, the dog may be 'too far gone' and the vet may recommend that the dog should be put to sleep humanely), Brandon the Rehoming Officer will be notified immediately and treatment will be started ASAP. After approximately 5-10 days when the symptoms of parvovirus disappear, the dog will be rehomed to one of the rescue groups who support this campaign and have isolation facilities to further isolate the dog for more time, to monitor and treat the dog, before rehoming.

We want to say a special thanks to Woodstock Animal Hospital and West Blacktown Vet for their support.

What if we don't reach our funding target?
If we don't reach our funding target but raise part of it, we can still save lives of innocent pups and for every $1,000 raised, we will be able to seek treatment for one dog with parvovirus.

Why was the Community Pet Care Project created?
The Community Pet Care Project was created because we care for animals as much as you do.  We aspire to share the story of animals in our community that are looking for your support.  They are lost, homeless or abandoned. We do this because each year in Australia nearly half a million animals end up in the welfare system through no fault of  their own, and through no fault of those who ultimatly end up having to care for them.

We share these journeys in the hope that you will walk with them.  Perhaps you can make a difference by donating to their care so they can one day have a home.
