Save PROJECT REACH - fundraising by PRORADS*
Project Reach ("PR") is an NYC community center advocating for and empowering youths and citizens including, victims of crime, victims of discrimination (sex, gender, sexual orientation), underprivileged youth, multi-racial, the LGBT community, and other segments of society especially during times of need. PR achieves this by coordinating workshops, training programs, organizing community awareness initiatives, and providing a safe haven.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: PR is on the brink of closing due to government budget cuts and needs your help today. In 1985, Don Kao joined the program he reached out to help youth, and provide a safe haven for many in the community. A few years later Don tested positive for HIV/AIDS, which was a death sentence in the early 80’s but Don persevered and resolved to continue his role as director of PR for the benefit of the youth of NYC. Amazingly at times he would have staff meetings in hospital room to keep his passion of the program running on course. Despite the multiple hospitalizations and near death experiences. A lifelong community activist, his efforts with PR have positively affected the lives of countless city youths for over 3 decades. Don and PR yearn to continue supporting youths and disadvantaged individuals and groups. Your contribution of $5 or $50 or more would be instrumental in saving one community initiative project, to keep one more program running, or preserving that safe haven for a person in need.
PROJECT REACH achievements:
1989: The youth of PR create a traveling anti-racism project to address tensions between Korean market owners and Caribbean residents of Brooklyn (NYC).
1991: Womyn's Strike campaign - young PR women protest sexism by picketing, sitting-in, and locking-out male counterparts, and successfully cause the institution to implement a minimum of 50% women run community programming.
2001: 70 young people organize to walk through, sit-in and speak out at a major AIDS organization protesting discrimination against immigrants living with AIDS.
2004: Social Justice Boot Camp - PR organizes a weeklong, nation-wide boot camp for 60 young people, including youths and organizations from NYC, upstate NY and as far as Texas.
*PRORADS (Project Reach Anti-Discrimination Space) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
