Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School (TMALS) is a public elementary school located in the culturally rich village of Harlem, NYC. We currently serve approximately 216 students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. TMALS was opened in 2005 in a collaboration between Abyssinian Development Corporation, the NYC Department of Education and New Visions for Public Schools
The mission of TMALS is grounded in the belief that all children can learn and have the fundamental right to reach their fullest potential. As a reflection of the African proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child," our school values parent partnerships and collaborative efforts with various community based organizations like the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (SoBro) who supports the Afterschool Program, businesses and other institutions within and outside of the Harlem community.
SoBro’s Education and Career Division mission is help youth build skills to support their academic achievement, raise their confidence, and cultivate their leadership skills through service learning and other civic engagement opportunities
SoBro at TMALS prides itself on teaching about different cultures through school lessons, visits to museums and various trips in and out of state. Learning about cultural relevance affords students the chance to broaden their perspective both personally and globally.
Extended Learning Time (ELT) has provided a window of opportunity for our scholars to continue learning educational material and fosters the growth of their talents and abilities. ELT serves grades K-5 from 2:40 until 5:15 each day, and is open for all students of the school to participate in. Our program was built as an extension of the school day and our day school teachers have graciously decided to stay longer hours, in order to continue lessons from the day or to teach extra material. This extension of the day allows the scholars to gain more information and with the addition of after school staff, there are even more opportunities for one on one help.
ELT uses TMALS's curriculum as a base for growth. During ELT, students reinforce those same tools given throughout the day while also learning new material. ELT provides two days of academic enrichment, two days of activities and one day of community service based clubs and activities. Scholars are introduced to activities like African drumming, African dance, Art, Science, Robotics, Yoga, Violin, Theater, STEM, Chess and more.
