Saving Both Ends of the Leash

Hello,

I’d like to introduce you to Atlas, my BC Certified Medical Alert Service Dog.

On Monday, February 26th, Atlas woke up displaying signs of distress including a swollen abdomen, excessive drinking, and lack of interest. Atlas did not appear interested in going to work, one of his most favorite things to do.

I contacted the local emergency vet, and they advised these symptoms were consistent with having bloat and to bring Atlas in immediately.

When we arrived at the emergency vet, Atlas was immediately rushed into exam and x-ray where our worst fear was confirmed, Atlas had “bloat” which is often fatal in large breed dogs -often by the time symptoms appear, it is too late.

Facing the reality of a large vet bill and potentially losing my service dog, I contacted my service dog training school “Operation Freedom Paws, Canada” (OFP-Canada) for their emotional support.

Thankfully, they were able to cover the cost of Atlas’ emergency surgery and ensured he was able to get the life saving treatment he needed.

Atlas was urgently intubated, and the Veterinarian removed over 2 litres of fluid from his stomach. Intervention was successful, however he still required observation and monitoring for up to 24 hrs to ensure there was no relapse or torsion of the stomach. It was also determined he had temporary liver damage from the bloat.

Atlas tolerated the procedure well and is now home recovering. Not many dogs are as lucky as we are. He will still require follow-up x-rays and additional lab work in the future.

I can’t explain how it felt to be leaving my partner behind, even though he was in skilled, caring hands, but it was a little easier to manage knowing that the costs had been covered and his life was saved.

Funds raised here will go towards replenishing the funds OFP-Canada graciously redirected from their client programming back to them so they can continue helping those in need obtain service dogs.
