Saving Dobby

If you know Elizabeth and I, you know how much love we have for animals. Anytime we see an animal in need, we jump into action and do whatever we can to help that little one.  Mind you, this is difficult living on a teacher's salary and teaching in a rural, impoverished area. In this rural area there are many stray dogs. Just last Friday (10/6), Elizabeth and I spent the afternoon trying to save a pup that just lost her litter of puppies and was in rough shape. We were able to bring her to our house, bathe her and bring her to the wonderful Darlington County Humane Society, where she is now almost fully recovered and available for adoption!

Yesterday, after dropping one of our students off in a tropical storm, the car in front of Elizabeth hit a stray dog who was laying in the flooded waters in the middle of the 55mph road. It was clear that the car went over her back legs. Elizabeth tried her best to swerve out of the way, although a ditch was on one side and an oncoming car was on the other. She was able to make a fast decision after processing that this was an injured dog, and drive over the middle so that she was not run over with the force of the wheels. Sadly, the dogs head was still hit up underneath the car, causing the car to bump up and down, and an onset of a loud whimper. She turned around, went out into the storm, picked up the limp dog and sped to an animal hospital, while in hysterics and with the greatest guilt in the world (Windsor Animal Hospital, 321 N Beltline Dr, Florence, SC 29501). I had already dropped my student off, and was closer to the animal hospital. I got there first and gave all the information I knew to the receptionist. I didn't have a name for this dog we just saved and being the Harry Potter fan I am, the name Dobby came to mind. In Harry Potter, Harry tries to save Dobby from a difficult situation, but Dobby ends up saving Harry. Luckily, the wonderful vets jumped into action and began saving Dobby! They did not care that we didn't have the funds right away nor did they care that the dog was a stray. They saw our crying and hysterical faces, the shape the dog was in, and started doing everything in their power to make the pup comfortable and diagnosing everything that would need done to get her fully healed. Dobby's back right leg is broken and will need surgery to fix with a medal rod. Her right eye also took a huge hit and will more than likely be removed during the same time of her leg surgery.

After asking for the best possible advice, the vet let us know that Dobby could make it through and he could fix everything that needed help. The only thing that would stop her from surviving would be the funds/not having the money to pay for her recovery.  For the length of stay, medicine, pain medicine, and surgeries, we are looking at about $3,000. The incredible staff at Windsor Animal Hospital were able to get the cost down to $1,200, while also doing the eye surgery pro-bono. That being said, this total will continue to accumulate as she continues to stay for another 1 1/2 weeks. As teachers, we cannot afford this and are asking for any donations, shares, prayers, or help that you can or are willing to provide! We both work 3 jobs in order to support ourselves, students, our own fur babies and make ends meet.

Anything you can contribute to help Dobby would be so appreciated. The wagging tail and loving licks we received in the morning are worth it. We are looking forward to being saved by her.

Already starting to improve. Our families, the staff at Windsor, great friends, and the good Lord are cheering for her like no other. This morning, we were greeted with smiles, excitement about her progress, and a few claps as we all have made a great team and express an incredible amount of compassion for this little lovebug.
