Saving the Kangaroo Island dunnart from extinction
Donation protected
Kangaroo Island has been devastated by wildfire over the past month. Over 200,000 hectares has been burnt, taking with it stock, bushland and many of the islands threatened wildlife. The Endangered Kangaroo Island dunnart is an endemic marsupial, found only within remnant bushland of the islands west end, its entire habitat has been burnt, all known monitoring sites have been burnt, the species may now be on the very brink of extinction.
Your financial support has been fantastic and we have exceeded the GoFundMe goal.
This financial support will now help Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlife and landholders to:
- locate remnant patches of unburnt vegetation and survey for the species through camera trapping.
- Replace the lost valuable survey equipment from the fires (cameras, fencing materials).
- Find the last few individual Kangaroo Island dunnarts and protect them from feral predators and further wildfire events.
- Protect the other Endangered species devastated by these fires, like the heath goanna, Kangaroo Island echidna, Southern brown bandicoot, bassian thrush and the Southern emu-wren.
- Secure the ongoing management of the Western River Refuge property for conservation of the KI dunnart and other threatened species within.
Many KI Land for Wildlife landholders have lost everything; their homes, their properties, their livelihoods. Your support will help the landholders we work with to revegetate their fire damaged bushland and maintain feeding & watering stations and shelter boxes & tunnels for wildlife.
We will continue to work with the dedicated private property landholders to survey for these endangered species and protect Kangaroo Island's wildlife from further threats, ensuring long term conservation as Kangaroo Island regenerates after these devastating wildfire events.
Your support is greatly appreciated and we can't thank you enough for the financial support received.
