Meet Sawyer, a resilient four-year-old facing a daunting journey ahead. Just 15 days after celebrating her fourth birthday, Sawyer will travel to undergo life-changing brain surgery in Houston. Sawyer's health struggles began with symptoms her parents initially dismissed as typical childhood experiences. However, in 2023, Sawyer's condition escalated with severe headaches, vomiting spells, and difficulty eating, leading to weight loss. Following an MRI in July, Sawyer's parents received devastating news: she was diagnosed with Arnold Chiari Malformation Type 1, where her cerebellar tonsils extended dangerously below the foramen magnum, causing pressure within her skull. After consultations with specialists, Sawyer's surgery was scheduled, involving the removal of part of her skull, her first vertebra (C1), and her dura. This procedure, followed by a duraplasty, aims to alleviate pressure and improve cerebrospinal fluid flow. However, Sawyer's journey to surgery faced hurdles. Initially set for November 1st, her surgery was postponed due to her family contracting COVID-19. Further rescheduling attempts were complicated by unforeseen events, including a sudden change in her neurosurgeon's availability. Determined to find the best care for Sawyer, her parents sought out Dr. Bauer, a specialist in Houston, despite financial concerns. Dr. Bauer's team expedited Sawyer's surgery, recognizing the urgency of her condition. Now, Sawyer's surgery is scheduled for February 28th, with her family needing support for the financial strain of their extended stay in Houston. They will have to purchase air fair, hotel, transportation to and from the hospital as well as a deductible that has to be paid to insurance company prior to the procedure. Your contribution to Sawyer's GoFundMe will ensure she receives the necessary care without added stress. Join us in supporting Sawyer as she bravely faces this challenging journey toward healing.
