Sawyers SPML Surgery

Donation protected
Most of you have seen posts I’ve shared about Sawyer in the past, and many of you have followed her story. For those of you who haven’t, Sawyer is my best friend Morgans daughter.

Sawyer is the most beautiful, outgoing, adventurous six year old I’ve ever met. To know her is to love her! Sawyer isn’t your average six year old though, she has Cerebral Palsy (CP). If you don’t know about CP, I encourage you to look it up! It affects body movement and muscle coordination. Only about 1 in 345 kids are diagnosed with CP, and 1 in 4 are diagnosed with Chronic Pain Syndrome. Sawyer is the 1 in both of those cases. In Sawyer this means muscle fatigue and weakness that leads to dystonic attacks (twisting of her muscles).

The past few months Sawyer has been dealing with severe pain with little to no relief! She has seen multiple doctors here in town, and even traveled to Gainesville to see specialists. Only some medicines give her very little relief, but that relief comes with scary side effects. The next option for her is SPML surgery.

What is SPML you ask? Selective Percutaneous Myofascial Lengthening (SPML) is a specific surgical technique to lengthen muscles, in order to improve the movement ability of children with cerebral palsy to sit, stand or walk. Very few doctors perform this surgery, and the closest one is in Texas.

Prayers were answered and on June 2nd Sawyers parents found out the doctor had an opening in his schedule for her to have her 3rd SPML surgery on June 23rd. Praise the lord!!

The out of pocket expense for this surgery is $8000. Due to the continuing rise of healthcare costs they are no longer offering payment plans and it must be paid in full 5 days prior to her surgery or it will be cancelled. This gives her parents about 7 days to come up with $8000.

Morgan and Michael are two of the hardest working people I know and would move mountains for their sweet girl!

During this time, they ask for your prayers. Pray for comfort, and pray that this surgery gives her great relief. Pray for them to have the wisdom to make these decisions. Pray for safe travels to and from Texas as well as prayers for the surgeon and his team as they perform the surgery.

As her best friend, along with those prayers, I ask that you consider giving towards her surgery cost. I can’t imagine the pain they feel knowing their child is in so much pain and there is little they can do to give her relief.
