Jane Shuman's Trip to Myanmar

Tax deductible
Jane Shuman will be returning with Hawaiian Eye Foundation (HEF) to Myanmar (formerly Burma) in August, 2015, for the second Myanmar Eye Meeting (MEM) at Yangon Eye Hospital in the capital city of Yangon.

At last year's historic training meeting --- the first of its kind in decades in this newly-opened country --- Burmese eye residents demonstrated adequate "book learning," but had very little training in basic eye exam techniques. Skills training for residents will be a focus of this year’s four-day meeting, along with lectures, patient consultations, and live surgery demonstrations for practicing ophthalmologists. The training will cover a wide range of topics, including cornea, pediatric, neuro-ophthalmology, glaucoma, refractive, retinal, and occuloplastics.

Help is needed to fund Myanmar Eye Meeting 2015, including meeting coordination costs, training supplies, and travel expense support for volunteer ophthalmic technicians who will serve as basic skills instructors (volunteer ophthalmologists pay for their own air travel and accommodations).

Myanmar has a population of roughly 60 million, and only 350 ophthalmologists, one-quarter of the World Health Organization’s target. The Human Development Index ranks the country as having one of the lowest levels of human development in the world. Be a part of history, help transition Burmese ophthalmology into the 21st century!

The non-profit Hawaiian Eye Foundation, based in Honolulu, has sponsored ophthalmic training programs in Southeast Asia since 2006, and for 30 years has conducted humanitarian eye surgery expeditions to Pacific Island and Latin American countries.
