Schiehallion Cancer ward for sick kids

Donation protected
We have decided this year we are going to Climb Conic Hill on Saturday 25th May for Schiehallion Cancer ward for sick kids.

This is a ward that is close to home for all of us at SCED because one of our longest standing nurses Lesley’s Grandson Joey has been treated here since Birth due to having a rare genetic blood disorder.

We are eager to try gather as much donations as we can as all money raised goes directly to Schiehallion wards 2A and 2B.

Every year more than 100 children are treated in wards 2A and 2B. Although 8 out of 10 children will survive beyond 5 years, cancer is still a leading cause of death of children in Scotland.

Sadly, despite the heroic efforts of the Schiehalllion team, not all children will respond to treatment. For these children, clinical trials can be a lifeline- but before were only available in highly specialised centres in England, now the money raised has enabled professor Gibson OBE and her team to achieve their vision of creating a leading clinic Trials Centre meaning more children can be treated in the hospital they know, by their own doctors and Nurses.

“We named the ward after the mountain – Schiehallion – to mirror the journey for children with cancer. We recognise that it’s an uphill struggle, but we also recognise that you can walk up a path with lots of people who will get you to the top.”

Lesley's story:
"My grandson was born 6 years ago with a very rare genetic blood disorder that affects his bone marrow and disrupts his red blood cell production which is called Diamond Blackfan Anemia,

He attends Schiehallion Ward 2A at the Sick Children's Hospital as he requires regular Hemoglobin checks and regular blood transfusions, which he will require for the rest of his life,
Every child that attends this cancer ward, are looked after by the incredible and caring nursing staff who try to make their stay as pleasant as possible,

SCED have decided to try and raise as much money as possible as every pound raised goes directly to this special cancer ward so children get the best of care. They have a fantastic playroom that they can go and get a break from their treatment as it can be very traumatic for some children and for their families. To see them play with other children is very special."
