Scholarship in Memory of Joseph L. Wingfield, Sr.

Donation protected
In recognition of his many years of service, Morehouse College is establishing a scholarship fund in the name of Joseph L. Wingfield, Sr.  The Scholarship will be used to further the education of a Morehouse student who embodies the characteristics of a student, an athlete, and is called to help out in his community.

Therefore, in lieu of flowers or other gifts at his memorial service or beyond, the family is asking that donations be made to the Joseph L. Wingfield Sr., Scholarship Fund. These GoFundMe funds will be transferred to the scholarship fund once it is established.

Joseph L. Wingfield, Sr., who was affectionately known by family and friends as “Papa Joe,” passed Monday, January 11, 2021, at the age of 75, after a month-long battle with COVID-19.

Joseph is a native of Atlanta, GA, and served his country as an Army sergeant.  Later he had a distinguished career in law enforcement for the City of Atlanta.

Joseph's lifelong passions were being an actively involved alumni for his alma mater Morehouse College and giving back to his community as a volunteer baseball coach.

A 1983 graduate of Morehouse College, Joseph served under Maroon Tiger great, Arthur J. McAfee, Jr. as head of basketball operations from 1981-1987. He rejoined the maroon and white in 2006 as a volunteer on the staff of Morehouse College Head Basketball Coach, Grady Brewer, in the same capacity.

"The Maroon Tiger family is saddened by the sudden loss of Joseph Wingfield," said  Coach Brewer. "He has been a tremendous part of our programs success and will leave a lasting legacy. Joseph was not only a colleague but also a friend who volunteered his time and supported our program without ever asking for anything in return."

Additionally, Joseph spent 20+ years as a volunteer baseball coach for several Atlanta-Area community organizations, including Belvedere Park Athletic Association.   He taught the fundamentals of team work, hard work, and sportsmanship. He donated many years of his life giving back to youth who would grow to be leaders in this society.  Notably, this includes his own grandson, Jordan Walker, who was recently selected in the 1st Round of the 2020 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Joseph was a fighter, a strong and principled man, a father to many generations of children and young men that he touched.   He will be missed.

The family of Joseph L. Wingfield, Sr. thanks you for your consideration.
