School for children in Rural Communities
Donación protegida
Hi. I'm Swanta Bonat, the Founder of COEC Nigeria (Community Outreach for Educational Change).
In 2016, I realized that most of my students in the prestigious international school I was working in located in Abuja already had admissions waiting for them in universities within and outside Nigeria even before their graduation ceremony.
I became troubled at the thought that their peers from low-income families had the opposite. I immediately put in my resignation and returned to the village to pursue active educational "evangelism" - taking quality basic education to underserved and unreached communities.
This birthed Community Outreach for Educational Change (COEC), a non-profit which exists to create quality classroom experiences and intentional role modelling; influence, change narratives and ultimately champion educational best practices as a response to SDG4 For children in rural and disadvantaged communities.
Since then, we have been in communities which mostly have no good primary education, basic health care, electricity or roads—we cross rivers to get to some. They battle with hunger and sickness and can hardly afford more than a meal each day, so education is a luxury and the schools we work with are mostly run as charities and these schools become their haven.
We have stepped up school facilities by renovating and improving some classrooms and hostel structures and also launched campaigns amongst which are the #FedToLearn school feeding program that gives 2 free meals and an egg to 136 school children to fight stunted growth and malnutrition amongst school children and the #GetASchoolChildOffTheFloor Campaign which has provided school furniture and housing facilities.

This has hastened our desire to set up a school in a rural community of Kaduna State that will help bridge the gap for such children. This school (equipped with competent teachers, modern technology, a feeding program, library and sick bay) will provide high quality education in line with 21st century demands for children in rural communities.
Our structure needs refurbishing in order to meet our target for full operations in September. Below are the details
Project: School Set Up
Location: Samaru Kataf, Kaduna State, Nigeria
Target Date: September 2020
