School Close's Garden Haven
Donation protected
School Close is a brand new specialist care service in the heart of Kirkcudbright that offers tenants a homely and accessible living environment. By using both leading architectural approaches and assistive technologies, it promotes a more independent way of living for adults with physical and learning disabilities.
The home supports 13 people, who had previously lived together in a traditional learning disability care home setting. The tenants now enjoy living in their own purpose-built modern apartments.
This wonderful new development is dramatically changing the way in which the people we support live, however, the large outdoor space is, as yet, undeveloped and underused.
We are keen to transform this space into a relaxing, functional and therapeutic garden to further embrace both independence and homeopathic therapies into the worlds of the people we support. The garden will completely change the lives of the people we support, enabling them to become more independent, enhance their creativity and improve their health and wellbeing.
A SPACE TO LEARN...
Developing their horticulture skills and growing their own produce will assist our tenants with their budget management and reduce outgoings for those on lower incomes. We will also invite horticulturalists and hobby gardeners to deliver short courses and workshops, teaching the people we support important skills.
A SAFE ENVIRONMENT...
For those not yet confident in accessing the community on their own, our garden will provide a safe and independent space for them to build their confidence.
AN ACCESSIBLE AREA TO RELAX...
Finally, we would like to create an accessible garden room for the people we support for those who have limited mobility. That way they can enjoy lots of direct sunlight and it can also provide shelter for everyone on the less sunny days - this is Scotland after all!
Help our vision grow
The impact on the lives of our tenants would be phenomenal. The people we support, their friends and family and our dedicated staff team would be immensely grateful for any contribution.
If you would like to offer your help in other ways, such as manual labour or donating materials, please contact me at niomi.brough@c-i-c.co.uk
