Scotland Essay

9/23/19

Hi! My name is Marli and I am raising money to go to Scotland with a small group of kids from my school in Los Angeles called The Realm. I applied to be in this class over my summer break, at which point I had to write an essay AND interview to even be considered. I was one of only 8 kids chosen. Now, we are in the process of self-fundraising to make enough money to travel abroad.  The total amount of money I need to raise is $3,000. I have loved learning about this phenomenal country and getting the chance to go to Scotland will be a dream come true.

My strategies for fundraising money includes; a bake sale, selling various items at school, pet sitting, doing chores, giving makeovers, selling unused items at a garage sale, hosting lemonade stands, selling holiday gifts at Open House,  and raising money (hopefully) via a GoFundMe page. I may even take over hot lunch sales once my fellow classmate meets her goal and no longer needs the fundraising opportunity.

We are deciding as a group where in Scotland we will go. I would love to go to the Isle Of Skye, Loch Ness, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. I’m really interested in castles that are over 1,000 years old! For example, The Dunrobin Castle is one of the oldest castles in the world, and we can visit it! I’m sure wherever we would end up going, I would have the time of my life.

Having the opportunity to travel to Scotland with my peers would be one of the greatest adventures of my life thus far. If I could raise the money and go, this trip would be an amazing experience and  something I would remember for the rest of my life. Going to Scotland with a few friends and just 2 teachers to look after us crazy teenangers- without my parents- would help teach me independence and gain maturity. Not only would we be parentless, but we’d be converting money, navigating our way around, learning geography, learning how to interact with individuals who live in a different culture, practicing cooking for the group, laundering our own clothes, and so many other “adult-like” activities that I’m sure I haven’t even thought of yet. Put yourself in my shoes and imagine being a 13 year-old girl trying to raise $3,000 for a school trip that you’ve worked tirelessly on. Imagine how wonderful it would feel to fundraise the entire trip yourself, and then follow through with planning and executing a dream vacation to Scotland. I look forward to experiencing this feeling, and I hope you can help me achieve my goal. Xx Marli.
