We (Barb & Rich) have started this GoFundMe to support our friend Scott Fairty and his family during his battle with Melanoma.
Our friendship with Scott started a few years back when we were novice kayakers. Scott is known as an accomplished athlete and a dedicated teacher in the kayaking community. Scott has been a selfless and quiet role model as he's shared his knowledge and furthered the community through work on committees and coaching. His dry wit and good nature are appreciated on and off the water. His impact on the lives of others is far reaching.
Scott discovered the melanoma last year and was treated at U of M in December. The initial report was positive, and it was thought that it all had been caught. However, Scott noticed some new bumps in January. After an MRI and CT scan, it was discovered that there were new lesions in the liver, lungs, spleen and brain.
With the help of his family, Scott is now battling stage four cancer with immunotherapy treatment. Per Scott, The road ahead includes
> Four rounds of immunotherapy -- every 21 days, with blood work before each session to monitor liver function
> CT scan after initial rounds to evaluate the effectiveness
> If it's working, then we will drop to a single drug (we are currently combining the top 2 drugs to hit it hard)
> The single drug immunotherapy might then continue for two years
Scott is resting at home and allowed limited physical exertion. He has his family at his side during this time.
On behalf of the family, we ask that you consider a financial contribution if it is within your means. We all know that the costs of treatment and incidentals can be daunting. If we can offset some of this cost, it would help ease the mind of everyone and allow Scott to focus on himself and his battle.
