In November 2021, Scott was diagnosed with a staph infection following hip replacement surgery. He had a follow-up surgery to clean out the infection in his hip and was put on antibiotics to help him heal and prevent the spread of the infection. In May 2022, he got off the antibiotics because he was told his infection was no longer existent. In September 2022, Scott was experiencing high levels of pain in his hips, back, and legs. He went back to his doctors and saw a chiropractor, but none were able to explain the pain. Then, on the morning of September 30th, Pam, Scott’s wife, found him unresponsive and called 911.
He was admitted to the ICU and found to have Sepsis caused by Staphylococcus Aureus. After numerous tests, it was determined that Scott’s infection had attached to his mitral heart valve and had spread through his bloodstream into his brain, causing him to experience a stroke. Doctors then prepared him for open heart mitral valve replacement surgery in order to clear the infection from his heart and reduce its continued spreading throughout his body. On top of open heart surgery, Scott also had surgery on his hip and his ankle to wash out the joints and also in the hope of finding and eliminating the source of the infection. Although they were unable to identify with complete certainty, Scott’s doctors believe the infection ultimately started in his hip.
After over a month in the hospital and in and out of ICU, Scott is recovering at a rehab center in Westminster, focusing on regaining his strength and mental capacity. Scott still has a long journey, including additional surgeries, ahead of him in order to gain back the independence and strength he once had.
We are very lucky that he is still here with us. However, this miracle comes at a hefty cost to Scott and his family. Scott would never want to ask other people to cover his expenses, although his family could greatly use assistance at this time. Pam has been unable to work, as she has been relentlessly by his side, being his biggest supporter and advocate. Scott is a retired PE teacher and coach, not quite old enough to qualify for Medicare, so the family’s out-of-pocket cost is a hefty cost to bear. If you have the capacity or have ever wanted to give back to a man who is absolutely selfless and has helped so many other people, we are asking you to consider donating to help with medical bills and other associated expenses.
