As a long-time rowing coach, from high-school kids at Sagamore Rowing Club on Long Island to the lightweight coach at Rutgers in New Jersey and then the heavyweight coach at Columbia University, Scott McKee has spent countless hours as a beloved rowing coach to almost 2000 rowers across his career.

Many of you relied on Scott as a tireless, enthusiastic and positive coach.  For some, a colleague, mentor, friend, advocate and others a surrogate dad, and as someone who knows Scott as well as anyone, I am asking all of you to consider paying it forward with a contribution to help Scott through the difficult situation he currently finds himself in.

At the end of 2017 Scott was diagnosed with an extremely rare blood cancer, Waldenstroms Disease, which afflicts less than a 1,000 people a year.  Despite that news, he remained typically calm and positive and assured me he would beat this new challenge like he does with everything he takes on.  After enduring nearly a year of assorted medical treatments and chemotherapy the positive news is that the blood cancer is currently responding well to the treatments and his blood-work which was 75 times above normal (in a bad way) is now in the normal range!  As luck would have it, during one of Scott’s recent CT scans, his doctors noticed an unusual hot spot, which shockingly turned out to be a type of bladder cancer that according to his doctors is totally unrelated. Scott has endured several surgeries to deal with this additional challenge and in his indefatigable manner he has been making headway against this as well.

As you can imagine, this has kept Scott from regularly working as he battles this current medical crisis.  I talk to him regularly and know how difficult it is to cover all of the medical, travel and unexpected related expenses added to the typical bills that life keeps bringing his way, adding greatly to his struggle.

There is no need to go on and on about Scott as all of us who rowed for him, coached with him or knows him, appreciate that he would do anything for us, but now is the time for us to help Scott.  It’s what we in the rowing fellowship do for one of our own.

Scott does not know we are doing this for him (I am afraid he would say no) so let’s keep it quiet until we have reached our fundraising goal. Doing so will certainly alleviate some of his financial stress and allow him to take on this health challenge with just a little less to worry about.

Your generosity is deeply appreciated.
