Topical Steroid Addiction (TSA) is a dependency on topical steroid creams. It's caused by the overprescription and long term use of these creams for chronic skin conditions like eczema when they should only be used short term. It is not currently recognised by the NHS and we want to change this so it can be treated properly and most importantly PREVENTED.
Having a Topical Steroid Addiction or going through Topical Steroid Withdrawal is terrifying, painful and can turn your life upside down... and the worst bit is - sadly it isn't a recognised condition in the UK, and many other parts of the world. That means most sufferers feel alone and are often treated with the first line treatment for skin conditions - more steroids! TSW patients suffer horrendously - yet we are left in the dark without medical support - or much support at all for that matter. We want to change that...
The SCRATCH THAT campaign and need funds for website hosting and future campaigning.
The symptoms of TSA and TSW are not like eczema.
They include:
Topical Steroid Addiction (whilst steroid creams are still being used):
- Spreading red rash all over the body
- Intense itching and burning
- Inability for creams to control rash
Topical Steroid Withdrawal (once steroid creams are stopped):
- Extreme skin shedding
- Oozing skin,
-Red sleeves (pictured)
- Nerve pain
- Trouble regulating body temperature
- Night sweats
- Insomnia
- Hair loss
- Oedema... the list goes on.
We know first hand how important support is for this condition and have built a website with bundles of information about the condition.
