Ernie's Battle Against Cancer

Many have been touched in some amazing way by Ernesto Mendoza.  This warm and wonderful man has served our Lord since the day he accepted him as his savior many years ago.  Ernesto has humbly served as the Lead Pastor in Pasadena, CA before accepting a Minister position in Las Vegas, NV 14 years ago.  Ernesto and his wife of 23 years have three children, Hannah (18), Abby (9) and Micah (4).

This May, Ernesto was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic liver cancer.  From the onset of the cancer discovery, the Mendoza family was told by doctors two things.  1) The primary source could not be located and 2) this was a rare form of cancer that would likely not respond to treatment.  Since May the Mendoza family has embarked on a journey to try to identify the primary source of cancer and search for possible treatment.  Ernesto has met with the City of Hope in Duarte, CA several times and spent two-weeks at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Phoenix, AZ undergoing tests.

Just this week doctors have identified the primary source – the small intestine. 

Unfortunately, due to the rarity of this cancer it has been a challenge finding treatment in the United States.  However, after much research, the Mendoza family has discovered two locations familiar with Ernesto’s type of cancer who offer treatment.  Both are located outside the U.S.  One is in Mexico and other in London.  We are grateful both have accepted Ernesto’s case and are willing to assess him with a great possibility of treatment.  Both treatment options will involve surgery to remove the primary cancer as well as removal of 75% of the liver.  That would just be the beginning. Treatment would follow according to the doctor’s findings in and after surgery.

These treatment plans are Ernesto’s only hope at survival.  They have brought great hope and encouragement, but also some worry, as these treatments are exceptionally expensive and are not covered under his insurance plan.  In addition, either option will also involve lots of travel (at this point we do not know how often and how far) since Ernesto lives in Nevada.
