Steven's Road to Recovery

Hi everyone, thank you for taking a moment to read about my son Steven’s Road to recovery. For those who don’t know my son, he is a 23-year-old young man who is a loving and caring individual. He has always loved outdoor adventures and what the world has to offer. As a member of a large military family, Steven decided to enlist in the Army after graduating high school. His Army adventure took him to basic training and Military Police school at Fort Leonard Wood. He followed on with assignments at Fort Hood Texas, Germany, Poland, and finished up in South Korea where he was honorably discharged last July after completing a 5-year service commitment. Steven loved to help people and enjoyed his position as a Military Police officer but decided to hang up his uniform to focus on finishing his degree in Criminal Justice and see what the civilian world had to offer. Since his discharge he has been a full-time student and was expected to earn his bachelor's degree this summer, however; his plans are now put on hold. He has encountered a life-changing event that will test his strengths mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.
On Monday, January 29th Steven took his motorcycle out to run a quick errand and never returned to his home. Steven was struck by a pickup truck as he was passing through a major intersection leaving him in critical condition, the extent of Steven’s injuries was unknown and left us devastated, helpless, and praying for his life to be spared. God has answered our prayers and Steven is alive but will require extensive rehabilitation for all the crushing injuries he sustained. Steven shattered his left leg, left arm, right hand, and broke his sternum along with several other bumps, bruises, and contusions to his face and extremities. The medical staff’s initial assessment is he will require several weeks and months of rehabilitation to get back to a life where he can take care of himself again. During his recovery, Steven will be unable to work, go to school, or provide any means for his day-to-day expenses. As this traumatic event is changing Steven’s life, I hope to relieve some of the financial burdens he is about to face until he can return to self-sufficiency.
While any financial assistance would be greatly appreciated, we also welcome words of encouragement, prayers, and advice from others who have been through similar experiences. Also, in full disclosure, Steven currently has no medical insurance or coverage. Steven’s military health care coverage (Tricare) lapsed from his military service after 180 days from his discharge date. He applied for medical coverage through the Veterans Administration (VA) but was initially denied and had resubmitted just days before the accident only to find out he did not submit the right paperwork after the accident had already occurred. We are continuing to work with several agencies to ensure he has medical coverage either through the VA, or Medicaid to see if any programs can help with his medical expenses. This is an area that we would greatly appreciate any insight as to what other options we can investigate to help ease Steven’s mind during his recovery. Thank you again for all your support, prayers, and well wishes for Steven’s Road to Recovery! All donations will be used for Steven’s medical treatment, care, rehabilitation, food, and monthly expenses until he is back on his feet and walking/caring for himself again.
