A Crowdfunding Campaign that Supports Four Projects and over 20 Artists

Hello, my name is Sea Novaa (formerly, Shannon Sea), and I am an inter-disciplinary artist based between Berlin and New York City. This year, I promised myself to be unapologetic about pursuing creative ideas and bringing them into reality. My art centers around the narrative of Black, queer expression. It requires contributions and collaborations from other artists, and I'm so grateful to work in this way.

My team and I created this fundraiser, because we refuse to wait for a “gatekeeper” to let us create. This fund will support over 20 Black artists and three art projects, which focus on Black, queer expression. Please consider supporting this crowdfund to help these projects become reality!

More details about the projects are below.

The Projects That Are Supported

"The Flowers of Dakar" is a multidisciplinary art project celebrating the queer communities of Dakar, while keeping their identities anonymous. This project will fuse together technology and art, and will comprise of video-mapping, video installation, photography, performance, and audio interviews. After two months of research in Dakar, Sea Novaa will work with local artists and community members to help bring this project to life.  Funds raised will help provide honorariums to participating members of the queer community.

"Two Humans Kissing" is an endurance art video performance that highlights intimacy and connectedness between Black femmes. The performance artists test their physical and mental limits as they kiss each other for 20-minutes, nonstop. We began production on February 3rd, at Oat Milk Studios in Berlin, and are currently in post-production.

The team for this production includes: Céline Rodrigues Monteiro as Producer, Michelle Gutierrez as Producer, Mandhla as Artist/Performer, Chikamaraa as Artist/Performer, Gugulethu Duma as Artist/Performer, Kimani Schumann as Director of Photography, Thais Nepomuceno as Lighting and Sound, and Sea Novaa as Creator/Project Lead.

"Black Woman Doing Nothing" is a live performance art piece that premiered in Hamburg, Germany on January 29, 2022 at M.Bassy. The piece illustrates the importance of Black women doing absolutely nothing and being present. This work emphasizes the fact that a Black woman's worth is not predicated on her service or value to others. Her worth is elevated in and of itself.

This project requires the collaboration of local artists, and this fund will help "Black Woman Doing Nothing" tour in Lagos, Nigeria, and throughout the U.S.

"Trance" is an exploration of movement and being. This is an interactive, computer art piece, that invites queer bodies to use repetitive movement as a form of meditation and release.

This piece embodies freedom, spirituality, sexuality, and being. It will be performed and documented with local queer communities in New York City and in Lagos.

The music is composed by Sea Novaa, and performed by El Congo. Digital art coding is created by Sea Novaa.

Community, Community, Community!

The projects being funded require artist collaboration and community involvement. I am thrilled to work with this team of artists!
