Seahawks Curt Warner Building Autism Home For Sons
Donation protected
Former Seahawks star Curt Warner and his wife Ana's twin sons Austin and Christian are 26 yrs old, and they both have Autism.
Please read about their inspiring mission to build a Adult Assisted Living Home for their sons and other adults with autism or developmental disabilities who have very little options of assisted living homes in Washington.
Since the boys were diagnosed at the age of 5 years old, the Warner's have always tried to provide the best treatments and therapies available so they could have a better life. However, their twin sons were profoundly affected by autism, and as they got older, their lives became much more complicated.
As the boys grew, they "aged out" of social-assistance. Several years ago, Curt and Ana were faced with the reality that instead of watching their children grow into adults, moving out, spreading their wings and making their way in the world on their own, their sons would not. This is a harsh reality for families who have children with profound autism. Many people associate autism with childhood, but the truth is that people on the spectrum don’t automatically outgrow their special needs when they become adults. Autism is for life.
Now, Austin and Christian are adults, and thoughts about who will take care of the boys when they are gone flood their minds.
Their focus became 'housing and their future'. Austin and Christian are not able to take care of themselves or live on their own. Finding and securing housing with appropriate levels of caregiving supports is very difficult.
The Warner's were unable to find an independent living home that they felt fit their needs, so they decided that they would build a home that would foster a safe and inclusive environment for their adult sons with autism and others like them. They are doing this with donations, volunteers and a lot of love.
They began this journey wanting to initially raise money to build a house, but a A VERY generous friend provided the funds for the Warner's to buy a fixer upper on a beautiful piece of land in Ellensburg and remodel the house to fit the 4 adults with developmental disabilities that will reside at the house (supported by House Parents). Additionally, they raised about $25,000 to purchase furniture, flooring and appliances.
The home purpose is to provide an assisted living home that will improve quality of life, wellness and community engagement for their sons and others.
The property will be developed so they can grow their own vegetables and fruits; so garden areas need to be built. Using regenerative grown produce, using farm animals to fertilize the soil, will help them have a more sustainable, organic life; so a barn and fencing needs to be built. The Warner's believe this will tremendously benefit those who live in the home.
HOWEVER, THERE IS STILL A LOT THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE, and Curt and Ana need your help!
Things still needed are:
* A large car to transport the boys and other residents back and forth to activities
* A new deck
* New blinds for all windows
* A TV and large sectional for a TV recreation room
* A riding Lawnmower
* Construction materials and labor costs, including permits, to build:
- garage apartment for someone that will provide respite support to those living in the home
- small barn and fencing to house animals
- large shed
- garden beds and fencing
-chicken coop.
These things are estimated to cost approximately $200,000
The goal is to raise $200,000 to go towards these expenses by December 31, 2020 as the plan is for the boys to move into their new house in the beginning of 2021.
