Hello, my name is Shawn Myers, and I am starting this fundraiser for my sister and her family. On 6-28-22 my 14 year old nephew Spencer had a terrible accident while riding a scooter. He hit something in the road which caused him to flip over the handlebars and land head and face first on the asphalt. He suffered head and mouth trauma, bleeding on the brain, collapsed lung, fractured cheekbone, and lots of road rash. He had to be airlifted to the closest trauma center, which is over an hour away from his home. He had to be intubated and then placed on a ventilator. They had to place a device on his head to monitor the swelling in his brain. He is also on a feeding tube, and will be for a lengthy amount of time. Spencer has been in and out of consciousness since the accident happened. Since the accident, the doctors have told my sister that he doesn't seem to have any damage to his spinal cord. However, he does have something called DAI. Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) is the shearing (tearing) of the brain's long connecting nerve fibers (axons) that happens when the brain is injured as it shifts and rotates inside the bony skull. DAI usually causes coma and injury to many different parts of the brain. Fortunately, he is not in a coma, and he has defied the odds for this diagnosis. This will require rehab after he gets out of the hospital. There is not a rehab center in Knoxville, TN. The closest rehab center is in Atlanta. This will require either a commute to Atlanta, which is 4 hours away or a stay at a hotel for an unknown amount of time. Both scenarios will be very expensive.
My sister and her husband are currently out of work to be with Spencer in the hospital. We are all praying and believing in a complete recovery from this with no lasting or permanent damage!
My sister will not be able to work for an unknown amount of time. She will be Spencer's primary caretaker when he gets to come home. We have no idea how long he will remain in ICU, and we have no idea what the cost will be.
My sister and her family could use any help available. Please keep them in your prayers, and thank you for any help you can give!
NOTE: PARENTS, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, MAKE SURE YOUR CHILDREN ALWAYS WEAR HELMETS WHEN RIDING ANYTHING!!
Lives can be changed in an instant! Wearing a helmet could have prevented this accident from being as serious as it is. Spencer is fortunate to be alive but has a long road to recovery. Please make sure your children wear helmets!!
