In late February of 2019, my Father contracted type A Flu which then progressed into pneumonia. Dad was then taken to the local hospital where he was treated for three days. However, my Dad was not improving as they weren’t properly equipped to treat him and had no other options to support him. So, he was flown to the University of Maryland Medical Center - Shock Trauma in Baltimore and placed in the Critical Care Resuscitation Unit where we hoped they could improve his condition; it was here that Dad was diagnosed with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). After they were able to get him stable, he was then transferred to the Lung Rescue Unit (LRU) so he could be treated by experts in lung health and placed on the ECMO machine which would give his lungs time to rest and heal. This machine was going to be his saving grace. There are only 2 hospitals in Maryland that have this machine. The doctors and nurses were very hopeful for a full recovery.
The doctors, nurses, and technicians in the LRU at the University of Maryland Medical Center Shock Trauma worked tirelessly and aggressively around the clock to save my father’s life. The LRU employs experts who specialize in advanced treatments for patients with complex respiratory illness. The experts of the LRU put Dad on ECMO which is a machine that is used for supporting the lungs and the heart. It was able to bypass his lungs in order to remove carbon dioxide from the blood and put oxygen back in its place in order to try to help Dad’s lungs heal. Unfortunately, my father was not able to recover from ARDS and passed on April 24th, 2019.
I want to give back to the people that took care of my father for nearly 60 days this past spring, therefore, I am asking you to sponsor me to run the B&A Trail Half Marathon. All proceeds will go to the LRU in the University of Maryland Medical Center.
No donation is too small. I would like to thank you in advance for your donation to the University of Maryland Medical Center in an attempt to improve the LRU.
