Emily is a beautiful, vibrant, bright 15yr old young lady that is desperately looking for a second kidney! One would allow her to enjoy life as it should be for a 15year teenager.
At 9months of age Emily was diagnosed with Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome Finnish Type, a rare disease requiring her to have a kidney transplant. Her dad was her hero at that time, donating one of his kidneys to his baby girl. She received this special gift at 19months of age, after a rough 10months of IV treatments, 20+ surgeries, dialysis, a respiratory arrest, 2weeks of being ventilated in ICU and many medications. For the last 15yrs she has been able to enjoy life to the fullest valuing every day with this precious gift and extra special bond that she has with her dad. She has enjoyed camping, spending time with her brothers, irish dancing, swimming, biking, volunteering at a nursing home, participating at the Canadian Transplant Games and extremely fortunate to make friend by being given the opportunity to attend transplant camp. Despite monthy bloodwork, regular nephrology appointments and daily medication for the last 14years this resilient, strong and determined young lady is now faced with finding a new donor. Her match will be difficult and she will be placed on 3 different list in hopes of finding her a kidney sooner that later. For the last 3 months she has spent 3 mornings a week, 3 1/2hrs per treatment in the dialysis unit and will continue this way of life until a suitable donor is found. Emily also requires daily injections and a special renal diet. She is now on more medication and with medical and associated expenses building it is creating a significant stress to both her and her family. If this had only been for a short time with an end in sight it would be manageable but the sad scary fact is that we do not know when a kidney will become available. For now we continue our search for a suitable donor, try to stay positive and hope for the best.
