Sebastian The Lamb Needs Wheels!
When Sebastian was first born, we thought perhaps he just needed an extra bit of time to get his legs underneath him. But as the hours went on, we could tell he was struggling beyond what was typical for most baby lambs. We whisked him off to our local farm vet who spotted the problem right away: Sebastian has spina bifida.
He's been seen by the best vets in the state, and while he's totally healthy from the hips forward, he likely will never walk.
But here's the thing: The moment you meet Sebastian you can tell he's just born to boogie. I actually called him "Mr. Boogiemonster" for the first two weeks of life--when I wasn't sure it was safe to name him because I didn't think he'd survive. He loves to wiggle and jiggle and scoot, he cannot wait to be able to keep up with Juliet, the other orphan bottle lamb we're raising on our farm. I know many farmers would have euthanized Sebastian on day one. But, he just has so much zest for life. Who am I to say whether he gets a chance or not?
I've held off on buying Sebastian a set of wheels because I wanted to encourage him to try and walk. As he grows larger, it's become clear that's probably not going to happen. So it's time to let Mr. Boogiemonster boogie his little heart out with a set of wheels.
We're fundraising for two wheelie carts, one that will fit him now, and one that will work when he's a full-sized adult. The University of Tennessee actually will help him get fitted for a full-sized cart once he's an adult, but it's not a cheap process. My hope is that Sebastian can live a full and happy life on our farm. We are so grateful to all of you who are willing to help.
