Sebeta Blind School Ethiopia 2025
Donation protected
My Name is Nicola McDermottroe from Oranmore, Co. Galway. I will be rejoining the amazing Building for Children team of volunteers departing in early January 2025 to Ethiopia. The team includes tradespeople and other professionals from Galway, Ireland.
We are raising urgent funds for the Building for Children Project 2025 to renovate and repair Sebeta Blind School in Ethiopia. (Sebeta is a town about 15 miles south-west of Addis Ababa). This residential school has are over 300 blind/visually impaired students from all over the Oromio region of Ethiopia.
Urgent Fundraising Needed for 2025 Project
In January 2025, we face an urgent crisis as we prepare for our next project at the Sebeta Blind School.
David, Padraig and Brendan visited Sebeta Blind School in October to discover that the well supplying water to the school has run dry. This unfortunate situation has left over 300 children without access to water for basic needs—washing, cooking, and sanitation have become monumental challenges, necessitating the need to fetch water from outside the area.
As we plan for our January 2025 initiatives, we recognize that the most basic necessity for life, water, is now critically needed. To address this dire situation, we estimate that drilling a new well, complete with necessary pipes and electrical installations, will cost approximately €100,000. Fortunately, the new pump and electrical system provided by Building for Children in January 2024 can be repurposed for the upcoming well.
Additional Project Goals for January 2025
In addition to securing a new water source, our January 2025 project aims to fund the following:
- Renovate the last two remaining dormitories to ensure safe living conditions.
- Upgrade the kitchen facilities.
- Construct a new shower block for former students who still rely on school facilities.
- Provide new clothing for the children, many of whom only possess one or two second-hand items.
Due to unforeseen expenses related to drilling a new well, we urgently seek contributions from individuals and businesses to help bridge the significant funding gap required to restore water access for the school. We are deeply committed to our mission and assure our donors that 100% of all funds raised will go directly to project initiatives, as we personally cover our travel, accommodation, and meal costs.
The achievements we've made in recent years are a reflection of the remarkable generosity of our supporters. For more information on our completed projects, please visit our website or follow us on social media.
