Secure safe housing for a Native relative.
Donation protected
A Native mother, auntie, and grandma who experienced houselessness last month needs our community’s help. Please help us raise funds to make up for the severe financial losses over the past month as well as maintain stability with food, rent and medical care for her during this time.
Who is this for?
This grandma has been an educator for 25 years and is medically retired/disabled. Working with children and taking care of others gives her purpose in life, and she continues to do so even through this difficult time by nannying and providing childcare for her community.
Why are we asking for help?
She lives in an area where many property owners are extremely racist toward Native people. She’s had multiple property owners offer her an apartment, but then take back the offer when they learn that she’s from a reservation. She’s also had two landlords refuse to renew her lease for no reason other than their racism.
This grandma’s previous property owners were exploitative and neglectful, and she was forced to spend her own money on apartment repairs to maintain a safe and sanitary living space. She had a housing offer in early June, but the property owner delayed the move-in date multiple times, putting her in greater financial debt. She had been experiencing houselessness for just over a month. Now that she is housed again, we're helping her get back on her feet and make sure that she can make up for the losses and have a cushion should it happen again.
Her family has done everything in their means and abilities to help, but they are out of resources. With continuing and rising costs to keep their relative safe and secure, they are asking the community for help.
Why is this important?
Money is one thing, but this about the safety, security, and dignity of a person who has cared for her family and community her whole life. These funds will make sure this relative has a quality of life that ensures her dignity as a human being, as well as her physical, and mental health.
The money from this fundraiser will pay back her hotel rooms, as well as supplement the costs of her food, medical care, and other necessities during that time and going forward. Anything contributed over our needed goal will go toward a rainy day fund to avoid an emergency situation like this in the future.
Please help us keep this beloved relative in shelter and safe!
